to work alongside a long-term project that I have always wanted to do and that
is a national bird field guide. The opportunity has now arisen with a brilliant
and enthusiastic field birder, who will be the author and more updates will occur
soon. The following plate will be among many for the project, and I’ve been
lucky enough to have most species of young tit going through, or breeding in my
garden, so I have been studying them over the last few weeks. I would love to
have both British Marsh and Willow Tit, in my Cheshire garden, but alas no and
these are not relevant to the project anyway, the Coal Tit in the form britiannicus
is also not relevant but the form hibernicus would be, so that gives a
hint to the field guide.
Ray Scallyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06354535668025351608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8270501580237144731.post-36325044923776184702016-03-23T11:33:00.002-07:002016-03-23T11:33:49.961-07:00TWITTERI'm now on twitter posting new images, sketches on a daily basis.
As many of you will know I illustrated Martins first two books in the Challenge series and had so many more in the pipeline. Martin was diagnosed with cancer when we were 6 weeks into the first book and his strength to continue and produce the 2 books in the series have given me such an incentive in relation to never giving up! The joyous parts were the success of both books which Martin saw published and sell out! I've also worked on two other great projects, The Birds of Spurn by Andy Roadhouse and The Breeding Birds of Barnsley, both to be published this year. I will now be concentrating on developing my artwork technique and trying new things along with birding! I lost my last two springs by working on the Challenge Series so am taking a deserved break to paint for myself, this will mean far more updates to the blog, also getting the website updated and the start of a twitter account! Below are the two spine paintings I have done for The Birds of Spurn, the Roller, and The Breeding Birds of Barnsley, the Hawfinch.
I've also just come back from Estonia and will update with my Steller's Eider study sheet shortly.
We are now starting the Winter edition and fingers crossed it will again be a great seller. There's nothing changed, same author designer and me and same format, a great design and layout by Chris Gaughan of Designwing. I work 4 chapters at a time, so basically I will line draw out all the four chapters, stretch the paper, draw up the 4 chapters and then paint! I've included my first draft line drawings of the large pipits which goes to Martin Garner for approval of shape etc! These will be revised and tweaked this weekend, I've stretched the paper and hopefully the first finished pencil lines will hit the paper on Monday!
It was gale force winds at New Brighton,
the chance of sketching the Purple Sandpipers was zero as I could hardly stand up, a successful trip seeing two birds, moving onto Inner Marsh Farm RSPB I connected with a superb ringtail Hen Harrier close to the hide so the two target species were nailed. The bonus birds of the day were two Great White Egrets sheltering in the gale force winds in the long reedy grass, there was also a lovely low sun, one of the birds stayed relatively still for a few minutes allowing me the attached study.Ray Scallyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06354535668025351608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8270501580237144731.post-78858774762508607222015-01-04T02:08:00.001-08:002015-01-04T02:08:17.561-08:00NEW YEARIts going to be a busy 2015 with 3 books on the go, firstly after the hugely successful Birding Frontiers Autumn book we are now starting on the Winter version to be hopefully published and released at the next Rutland Bird Fair, also alongside this and in the same series I will be working on a Gulls book dealing with the large gulls. Finally the long awaited Birds of Spurn by Andy Roadhouse will be the final publication, I will be doing the cover of that and an internal spread. I will be starting the Birding Frontiers Winter book next week and will be doing weekly updates on the blog, the blog has been neglected but I have cut back on work this year to spend more time updating it on a weekly basis!
The study sheet below was undertaken yesterday at Newchurch Common in Cheshire of a Smew.
I 've started to sketch on single sheets of watercolour paper instead of a notebook, its far easier to move the sheet around and no centre seam!
The study below was the juv Red-necked Phalarope, not seen one for some years!
The book turned out to be the best selling book at the Rutland Bird Fair with great reviews and the success means the other seasons and family groups will be produced in the future, projects I am relishing!
This left me very little time to up date the blog, and revise the website but this is my priority now and will work it alongside the other books and artwork I will be undertaking. I've started by uploading some of the book, the cover original with the printed version beside it, this book would not have been as successful without the keen eye and high quality design and print by Chris Gaughan of Designwing and Swallowtail Press, two superb companies. I've also uploaded the Treecreeper chapter illustrations, indicating the differences between Northern and British Treecreeper and the other plate is Hen an Northern Harrier, both done in watercolour. Will upload some note book sketches later this week!
I'm currently working on an identification book which is very time consuming but will upload some of the sketches in progress for the book. The picture attached now is one that has just been published on the cover of the BTO WEBS publication, I was very pleased with the reproduction, a very nice journal!
I've attached some sketches I did at Spurn, Yorkshire of a female Red backed Shrike, also attached is a recent commission I undertook of an Ibisbill. I've also attached a black and white ink drawing of a Yellow browed Warbler recently published in the Yorkshire Bird Report.
My website has now been closed for refurbishment and updating by my good friend Gary Noden in line with the design of the blog. It will feature new artwork when up and running again which I hope will be within the next month. I've been busy trying to get the decks clear so I can get some birding in this spring and I am currently working on some pieces for the Isles of Scilly Nature Review and Lancs Bird Report which I hope to bury over the Easter, after Easter its heads down to start on the cover for the BTO webs publication which I have to thank another friend for namely Jack Ashton B! Attached are two sketches recently done of the female Smew at Old Moor, both were done in the field, the top one done very quickly indeed with a little more care on the lower one, all the tones etc were done with pencil with the colour wash put over when i got home, toneing and doing the shadow in the pencil first literally makes a 30 second over painting job!Ray Scallyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06354535668025351608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8270501580237144731.post-89401230665423545672013-02-16T05:35:00.000-08:002013-02-16T05:35:10.101-08:00

I finally started to get some new artwork together to update the website, a lot of that work will be in the near future publications of the Yorkshire Report and the Spurn Nature Review, the following very spontaneous watercolour was of a flock of Common Scoters over the sea, I tried not to fiddle in too much detail and do each bird with one swoop of the brush and then the inclusion of shadow when they were semi dry.Ray Scallyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06354535668025351608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8270501580237144731.post-35124625504736032232013-01-21T05:20:00.000-08:002013-01-21T05:20:34.256-08:00I've just finished a lot of coloured artwork for the Spurn and Yorkshire Bird Reports and amanged to find a spare hour on Saturday to sketch out the kitchen window, the feeders are currently very busy with Lesser Redpoll, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, most of the tits and Blackbirds. The Blackbirds and Chaffinchs were confiding and I've attached some sketchs done within the hour of watching.
The last couple of months have been basically taken up by the county of Yorkshire, all the illustrating work had something to do with the said county! The image above of an arctic tern is for this years Yorkshire Bird Report published by the YNU and will be out later this year. I have a number of illustrations in this publication and am now coming to the end and near completion. This painting was watercolour and gouache on 300g stretched watercolour paper. With the end in sight I will be freed up to do some birding and field sketches.

I was asked to produce a header drawing for YORKSHIRE BIRDING magazine which I contribute to on a regular basis, it was for an article in relation to breeding Great Black backed Gulls. I wanted to do something different other than showing the adults so I decided to draw the chicks, something I had not done before.Ray Scallyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06354535668025351608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8270501580237144731.post-11071231873195081722012-11-15T00:30:00.000-08:002012-11-15T00:30:05.838-08:00NEW DESIGN

I've finally managed to get myself organised and re design my blog and in the near future, pre Christmas hopefully, overhaul my website with new work and simplification. Its been a very busy period over the last few months but I did have plenty of time to get some birding in and a few visits to Spurn, a lot less than normal but hope to rectify that next year. The blog will now contain more field sketches with finished work going onto the website periodically but the odd finished painting / drawing will also be on the blog. The first for the new period is one of the illustrations that's just been published in the Isles of Scilly Nature Review of a WOODCHAT SHRIKE. I've also uploaded some sketches I did of ARCTIC WARBLER and GREENISH WARBLER observed this Autumn on the east coast, it was great to study these two species within weeks of each other.Ray Scallyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06354535668025351608noreply@blogger.com0
